What will free us from decades of accumulated complexity and make the computer simple again?

The IT industry bloomed through a tacit partnership between Microsoft, Intel, hardware manufacturers, software vendors, and IT staff. The Internet, globalization, and new technologies have since broken that alliance.

The network jumped ship first, with the arrival of the Internet. Software followed, through Open Source, SaaS, and cloud computing. Then data left, with cloud storage,* and hardware left with mobile computing.

In this new world, networking, hardware, storage, and compute are commodities. Each tends to be more reliable, safer, less expensive, simpler to use, and easier to maintain than the on-premises alternative it replaced.

No stone is left unturned by the shift. Even a resource-hog like CAD can now be had in the cloud.

The heavy lifting has moved to the server side, where the value is created. All that is needed on the user side is a software client** or a mobile device to channel that value downstream.

Mobile devices run containerized programs called apps. An app and its device can each be updated without breaking the other, an escape from the kind of dependency tangle once known as DLL hell. And unlike an ordinary browser and its web page, an app can keep some of its functions when the connection is cut, and a Progressive Web App will run on any platform at all.

It is as if the cloud, which makes such heavy use of containers, were remaking the personal computer in its own image. The hardware now built by Apple, Microsoft, and Google is mobile and made for that world. Most Apple products run on ARM-based processors now, so the Mac and the iPad Pro are becoming interchangeable. Android has absorbed Chrome OS, and Microsoft ships powerful PCs on ARM chips too.

If the client has been remade in the cloud's image, the cloud itself has taken on a heavier job than any before it. Artificial intelligence does its thinking in datacenters a business will never see, and a browser or a phone is enough to put it to work. And the making of it is no longer held by a few: the industry's share of open-model development has fallen from about 70 percent before 2022 to roughly 37 percent in 2025, while independent developers have grown from 17 to 39 percent of everything downloaded, at times more than half.1

Many of those models are open, free to download and run on hardware a business controls, so intelligence is becoming something a firm can own outright, not only rent by the month. The question worth carrying into that world is an old one in new dress: who can read what you feed it, and how would you know?

The same intelligence is now being turned on the very complexity that made computers hellish to begin with. In May 2026, Microsoft's security teams used a system that directs more than a hundred cooperating AI agents to uncover sixteen fresh flaws in Windows, four of them critical openings in its networking and authentication code, and the same system now leads the public benchmark that pits such tools against more than fifteen hundred real vulnerabilities.2 The machines have begun to help make the machines safe, and a safer machine is a simpler one to live with.

Every one of these shifts runs the same way, toward less to maintain and less to go wrong. User expectations have changed with them, and the way work itself is done has changed too. Now is the time to streamline. That is the future we build toward: we retire the tangle, move each workload to the side of the wire where it belongs, and hand a business technology it can own, inspect, and understand. A simple estate is the harder thing to build, and the one that keeps paying back.
